\nMembers of the Long Island Woman Suffrage Association didn’t let a little rain stop them\u00a0from \u00a0marching Monday in the Glen Cove Memorial Day Parade to honor our veterans! The marchers’ enthusiasm more than made up for their reduced numbers!<\/p>\n
During World War I suffragists played a very active role in supporting the war effort. Harriet Burton Laidlaw of Sands Point led a campaign to enlist women to help with the state military census. Suffragists\u00a0also joined the National League for Women’s Service, where they ran canteens for servicemen and offered classes in food conservation for those at home. They sold war bonds, and volunteered to work as nurses overseas at the front. They supported their country’s efforts even before they had a voice in its government.<\/p>\n
