\"Alva\"Suffrage Operetta Gives $8,000 to the Cause<\/p>\n

On February 20, 1916 the New York Times<\/em> reported that Alva Belmont staged the\u00a0operetta, “Melinda and Her Sisters,\u201d at the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City to benefit the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage. The play netted $8,000, proceeds \u201cto be used for campaign work in the West.\u201d The Times<\/em> reported that Mrs. Charles Whitman, wife of the Governor,\u00a0was with her husband, and sat at Mrs. Belmont’s table. “The Governor did not remain.”<\/p>\n

This article is just another indication of the strong influence Alva Vanderbilt Belmont tried to exert on behalf of the women suffrage movement, and how much the movement was in her debt.<\/p>\n
