100 years ago today, August 18, 1920, women throughout the nation finally won equal citizenship with their male counterparts – the right to elective franchise, to have their voices heard – the right to vote.

After a bruising seventy-two year battle it all came down to the State of Tennessee, the thirty-sixth state needed for ratification. The voting was intense, with skullduggery by anti-suffragists, last-minute vote changes and then – the result of decades of battle finally realized. The 19th Amendment officially became law on August 26, 1920 when it was finally certified as part of the Constitution by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.
