Suffrage Celebration in Northport Celebrating the Life of Victoria Woodhull

Northport, Long Island staged a wonderful parade and celebration for Women’s History Month yesterday, March 20, celebrating both the woman suffrage movement and the life of Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president in 1872.

The Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association conducted a small parade of men and women in historic costumes, following an antique car, carrying placards urging “Votes for Women.” The video of this wonderful celebration can be seen on the Newsday website at www.newsday.com/suffolk.

This is one more heartening example that the spirit of the woman suffrage movement is alive and well on Long Island!
