As our suffrage centennial year comes to an end I wish to thank all those who helped make it such a success. Through scores of meetings, marches, lectures, published magazine and newspaper articles and historical marker dedications we joined with friends and fellow suffragists to impart one very special message – that of gratitude to the women who came before us, on whose shoulders we stand, women who fought and marched and campaigned and published and lectured and suffered for almost seventy years, simply to secure for us and for those who come after us the right to have our voices heard – the right to vote.
I have met so many wonderful, dedicated women (and Suffragents!) this past year who share my commitment to remembering and celebrating this cause. As 2017 ends, we now join with women throughout the nation to celebrate the ratification of the 19th amendment in 1920, through which all women in the United States were finally enfranchised. We will share news of these achievements with you so that we may all remember and celebrate together.
We welcome your comments and participation, and look forward to working with even more of you as this vital journey continues.
Happy New Year! Antonia Petrash, President – The Long Island Woman Suffrage Association
